Community

Building the trust of communities: We aim to be a good corporate neighbour, trusted in the communities where we operate, by engaging with them and sharing our skills and resources to create real and lasting benefits.

Our approach

Building the trust of communities has been part of ScottishPower’s core values for many years.  We have a long track record of supporting communities not only financially, but also by sharing our resources and the skills of our employees.

Our community programmes are directly linked to our business strategy and focus on a common theme – helping young people.  Each of our businesses concentrate their community investment programmes on areas that fit naturally with their business strategy and day-to-day activities:

Our flagship corporate community programme, ScottishPower Learning is focused on education/employability.

For EnergyNetworks, public safety is the key issue that drives its community programme. The business supports and runs a range of programmes designed to help improve the awareness in young people of the dangers of electricity.

Energy Wholesale’s business is built on science and technology so it makes real sense for us to support initiatives that encourage a greater interest and understanding of science among young people. Within our Generation and Renewables businesses, we provide a range of opportunities for people to see our operations first hand at one of our visitor centres.

Working with the Prince's Trust

Energy Retail’s community programmes are designed to educate children of all ages about the environment and help them become more energy efficient.  They are designed to provide opportunities for young people to switch off their TVs and computers and get active.

We consult closely with communities early on in our development process for new projects, such as windfarms or upgrades to power lines, to ensure local people have an opportunity to comment on and input into our designs.  See how we are consulting with local communities.

We are also committed to supporting the cultural well-being of our local communities. Check out our arts sponsorships section for more information.

Through our programmes, we have developed a range of educational websites and downloadable materials for teachers and parents. Check these out in our resources section.

Finally, where possible, we use our programmes to develop leadership and other skills within our own staff. As a result our community programmes benefit both the community and our businesses, and this helps ensure their sustainability.
