How CCS Works
Transportation
Once the CO2 has been captured, it is compressed into a liquid ready to be transported to an offshore location.
CO2 can be transported by on and offshore pipeline, by ship, or by a combination of both.
Pipeline
There are approximately 5,600km of long-distance CO2 pipelines around the world. The majority are in the US and Canada where CO2 has been used in a process called Enhanced Oil Recovery for many years.
Shipping
There are already four tankers in the world that are purpose-built for shipping CO2, these are all owned by Coca-Cola. Shipping liquefied CO2 is also similar to shipping liquefied petroleum gases (LPG), and shipping companies are now investigating the potential of scaling up vessels to accommodate large quantities of CO2.
